In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the first lockdown in March 2020, businesses and entertainment industries around the world faced significant challenges. With the disruption of traditional live events, Plus Radio 102,6, the top radio station for foreign music in Thessaloniki, faced the dilemma of how to maintain its connection with its audience during this uncertain time. As they approached their second anniversary of live shows, the station sought an innovative way to engage its listeners despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic.
The challenge was clear: how to celebrate this milestone and offer an interactive, engaging event for Plus Radio 102,6’s loyal audience when physical gatherings were not possible? The goal was to find a creative solution that aligned with the station’s brand and utilized the digital platforms available to maximize reach and engagement during the lockdown.
The FutureCats proposed an innovative solution—a live-streamed online concert to be held across multiple social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. This event would take the form of an online party, featuring the popular local band, MY EXCUSE, who would perform a setlist of popular foreign music hits, tailor-made to fit the station’s playlist.
By leveraging Restream.io and OBS software for live broadcasting, The FutureCats ensured the seamless execution of the event. The band performed from five different locations, with 10 radio presenters joining the live stream from both their studios and homes, further amplifying the sense of community and engagement. The event was aptly named “PLUS RADIO 102,6 HOMEMADE LIVE CONCERT.”
The concert was promoted through organic posts and paid campaigns on social media, encouraging audience interaction through song requests and engaging with fans ahead of the event. The goal was to drive participation and enhance the organic reach of Plus Radio 102,6.
The results were outstanding, with over 22,000 unique viewers engaging on the event day. More than 2,500 viewers interacted live across the three platforms, and over 400 viewers watched the concert concurrently. The success of this online live concert not only celebrated Plus Radio 102,6’s anniversary in a unique way but also reinforced its position as a leader in digital engagement.
The project was recognized for its innovation and creativity, winning a Silver Award at the Indie Awards 2021 in the category of Most Innovative Use of Digital.
